FPA National Capital Area Presents

Pro Bono Opportunity Working with Service Members at Quantico Base

Hello FPA NCA Members,

My name is Steven Fox and I'm reaching out to you on behalf of Financial Independence Training Inc, which is a San Diego-based nonprofit organization focused on providing financial education and counseling to our nation's service members. For the past few years we've been organizing events at local military bases to provide one-on-one counseling sessions with CFP volunteers, who have now helped to provide individual financial counseling to over 1000 service members during previous events at Camp Pendleton and MCAS Miramar. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both the military units we support and our volunteers, and are proud of the progress that has been made so far.

In an effort to broaden our impact and help as many service members as possible, we have decided to start expanding this program nationwide and opening up opportunities to run events at other military bases. Since we have had success with sourcing the majority of our volunteers from the San Diego FPA chapter, we thought that the most straightforward path to expansion would be to start with other FPA chapters with military bases nearby. We are undertaking this expansion with the support of the Foundation For Financial Planning and national leaders of the FPA, and under the terms of an MOU recently approved by the Secretary of the Navy.

Due in part to the FPA National Capital Area's proximity to the Marine Corps base in Quantico and your demonstrated history of strong support for pro bono efforts, we have decided to do a test run of this expansion effort in your area and are currently looking for volunteers to provide one-on-one counseling to active-duty Marines at an upcoming event in early June (confirmation of exact date pending). Based on attendance estimates from the unit we're supporting, we expect to need approximately 15 volunteers for this event.

We'll have enough time for each volunteer to meet with about 4-5 Marines over the course of a single morning, with each meeting taking approximately 30 minutes. There is no longer a requirement that volunteers be CFPs. However, all volunteers will have to agree to abide by the CFP Board's Code of Ethics and will be asked to sign an agreement stating that they understand these meetings are conducted on a strictly pro bono basis and not to solicit business or advertise their services.

Please note that it is ok if you do not have much direct experience with military financial matters. Some potential volunteers in the past have been concerned that they don't know much about military pay/benefits, SGLI, deployments, or other issues specific to the military. Most of the Marines needing counseling will be there for basic financial issues that you are all very well qualified to assist with. However, please be assured that there will be ample help available on site if there is a military-specific question that you don't know how to answer.

You may not be aware that personal financial issues are a tremendous problem for many active-duty service members, particularly younger ones. Due to the unique challenges of life in the military and a widespread lack of financial education, many of them are suffering through significant consequences on both their careers and their personal lives. Having served as a Marine for over 8 years myself I can tell you that personal financial issues in the military are rampant, their impacts are often understated, and the available resources to help are very limited We can't do this work without volunteers, your help is both needed and greatly appreciated!

Please feel free to check out our website at www.fit-inc.org for additional information about our program, as well as educational resources for our volunteers. You are also welcome to pass this message along to any of your coworkers or colleagues who might be a good fit to volunteer.

We have just received final confirmation of the event from the Marine unit that we're supporting, and we are targeting June 18 for this event. This date is still awaiting final confirmation, but we anticipate confirmation for this date will be finalized soon. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to me at Steven@NextGenFinancialPlanning.com or (760) 683-4666 so that I can add you to our list to receive final details as they become available.

Thank you!
