Dear Financial Counselor:
At the request of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), MHN Government Services (MHNGS) is seeking Accredited Financial Counselors, Chartered Financial Consultants, and Certified Financial Planners for occasional weekend work and/or rotational work (30, 45, 60, 90 days) to provide brief educational presentations and personal financial consultations. There are also opportunities to provide in-depth seminars and workshops on specific financial topics using pre-approved OSD curriculum at installation sponsored financial fitness road shows designed to promote the financial literacy and readiness of military families. Personal Financial Counselors meet with military service members and/or their family members who are Active Duty or members of the Guard and Reserve Service Components, many of whom may be preparing for or returning from deployments. The goal is to assist Military Service members and families with personal financial readiness, money management, and budget counseling.
Being financially aware and prepared is especially important for military families, who can be separated for long periods of time, and under great stress. The current economic climate is proving especially difficult for Service Members. Personal Financial Counselors address a wide array of issues confronting Service Members and make solution-based referrals to approved support resources. PFCs help the family members to manage finances wisely, and help them identify resources available to them.
Initial requests for services came from the National Guard for their Drill Weekends, which are held throughout the United States. Going forward, PFCs will assist Service members at installations both stateside and overseas, for events as well as one-on-one counseling, with PFC time commitments of anywhere from one day to ninety days. PFCs may also see military families by appointment in independent, private offices within the community if the office is not affiliated with a commercial brokerage, agency or insurance company.
If you were asked to staff an event, MHNGS would provide you with presentations tailored for the military, and all counseling would be subject to the DoD restrictions on scope of practice and financial advise. You would be under contract to MHNGS, paid at $50/hour for on-site professional time, plus $50/hour for travel time (up to three hours each way). MHNGS will also cover costs of reasonable transportation, meals, and lodging.
For PFCs filling assignments at locations distant requiring travel to a distant location, travel and lodging expenses are paid by MHN, with a “per diem” amount to cover meals and business expenses.
If you wish to join our network you must complete a network/credentialing application, availability/demographic survey, and consultant agreement. MHNGS will verify your credentials and perform a background check. As part of the credentialing process a 45-minute telephonic interview will be scheduled. The interview will be conducted by MHNGS associates with Financial Counseling expertise or by an experienced network PFCs. A successful interview is a requirement to participate in the program.
Once accepted to the program, consultants are required to complete an on-line training program prior to receiving assignments. Consultants are paid for the time required to take the training up to a maximum number of hours. You will receive additional information about the training upon acceptance.
