JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM
Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area has invited the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area to participate in a wonderful, well established volunteer program beginning October 2008.
Junior Achievement is looking for volunteers who are able to volunteer for 45 minutes one day each week for 5 weeks starting in October. The Fall session will predominantly be for 3rd graders at schools in Bethesda, Silver Spring, Vienna and McLean. The exact schedules will depend on the school and the teachers, as well on your schedules. However, if you have a strong preference for high school age children, please notify us and we should be able to place you. Junior Achievement welcomes as many volunteers as we have available to teach financial basics to these young people.
Junior Achievement has long-standing relationships with local businesses, and has a turnkey program easy to execute. We hope to add additional training sessions to accommodate additional volunteers. We will announce more 2009 opportunities for this effort as we gain more details. Thank you for your help with this terrific program and opportunity in our community!
Please visit www.myJA.org to submit your application and learn more about Junior Achievement. If you have additional questions, please contact Rachael Decosta-Martin at Rachael.Decosta@calvert.com or (202) 498-0852.
WALTER REED PROGRAM
FPA National Capital Area is working with Walter Reed in bringing Financial Literacy Programs to the staff and soldiers at Walter Reed. More of these educational sessions will be announced for 2009. If you are interested in volunteering for this program, please submit your name to Peggy at PeggyNelson8@verizon.net. Usually, your participation would include about one or two hours of your time at Walter Reed on one day presenting ideas on specific topics and answering questions. Thank you for your help on this important Pro Bono Project!
BLACK WOMEN UNITED FOR ACTION PROGRAM
Black Women United for Action (BWUFA) was founded in 1989 and is a volunteer, non-profit community service organization committed to voice the concerns of women, heighten the awareness of the impoverished, and improve the lives of vulnerable families through a grassroots/empowerment approach. Our mission is to voice the needs of women, to heighten their achievements, and to improve the lives of "at-risk" families.
BWUFA has adopted Chantilly Mews, a low income housing development in Chantilly, Virginia. The services we provide include mentoring, tutoring, helping students obtain higher education, and offering educational and cultural enrichment activities and workshops to help bring families towards self-sufficiency. We also provide in-kind donations such as clothing, food, and other supplies throughout the year. Our other programs focus on events and activities concerning women's issues, the history of slavery, and international outreach.
The BWUFA Adult Life Skills Program offers classes in money management to low-income mothers residing in Chantilly Mews. As in most low income housing developments, the majority of the residents have never been taught how to efficiently and effectively manage their money. Our goal is to provide the women of Chantilly Mews with the skills needed to make better, educated decisions in money management. Please contact Teresa Burrous at tburrous@bwufa.org for more information on this project.
