VA TECH 2008 Status Update:
- A collaborative program supported by the Departments of Agricultural & Applied Economics and Finance, Insurance & Business Law is gaining popularity on campus and currently has approximately 50 students enrolled. The program is registered with the CFP Board of Standards, Inc.
- The program is continuing “value-added” learning experiences beyond the classroom:
- Participation in the national Ameriprise Financial Planning Invitational, which the VT team won in 2007
- Participation in the inaugural 2007 International Association of Registered Financial Consultants FInancial Plan Competition. The VT team was 1 of the top 3 teams.
- “Urban market tours” to visit financial planning firms. Students visited 5 Richmond, VA firms in November 2007 and planning is ongoing for a trip to NOVA/DC in spring 2008.
- Participation as Student Volunteers at the annual FPA meeting. 2008 in Boston will mark 10 yearsof participation - 1 of the few universities given the opportunity to continually participate!
- Participation as scholarship recipients at NAPFA meetings. In 2007, 4 students and an invited faculty member attended the Northeast Mid-Atlantic and the Southern Conferences as essay scholarship winners.
- Limited use of professional software as well as the continuing emphasis on mathematical and Excel computational skills.
- Internship experiences.
